When used as the only light the 17-21 LEDs provide very subtle ambient lighting around the wall in full darkness. 30-53 LEDs will allow you to move around an average sized room comfortably without the need for another light source. Please note that LEDs give dispersed light not suitable for tasks that require precise visual attention such as reading.
